Dragon Quest (1986) - The First RPG in the Dragon Quest Franchise

Dragon Quest is the first game in the Dragon Quest franchise, released in Japan in 1986 and North America inDeveloped by Chunsoft and published by Enix, the game is a role-playing video game (RPG) available on Nintendo Switch. Players control a hero character who must save the Kingdom of Alefgard and rescue the princess from the evil Dragonlord.

Created by Yuji Horii, Dragon Quest is inspired by previous RPGs such as Wizardry, Ultima, and Horii's own 1983 title The Portopia Serial Murder Case. The game features artwork by manga artist Akira Toriyama and music by Koichi Sugiyama.

Dragon Quest has been ported and remade for several video game platforms, including the MSX, PC-9801, Super Famicom, Game Boy Color, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 4, and mobile phones. The North American version featured numerous changes, including battery-backed RAM save games and modified character sprites.

Despite initially mixed reviews in the West, Dragon Quest has been credited with establishing the basic template for Japanese console RPGs that followed. Its original pseudo-Elizabethan English script has been praised in many reviews.
